History of Special Education
We've spent a little time talking about the history of special education and conditions for people with disabilities long ago. Now I want you to see it.
As you watch this, think about the other kids you know and we work with. Think about them in the situation you'll see in the clip. Think about the things they are able to do, that they might not have been able to do had they been born just 30 years earlier. I want you to think about this; Senator Robert Kennedy made his remarks in 1965. The reporter, Geraldo Rivera, did his report in 1972. 7 years and still no change. Think about the words being used and why we no longer use them.
Answer these questions in your comment:
1- Why does change take so long?
2- What effect do you think this report had on the American public?
3- What are your personal reflections about how people have been treated historically?

Defining Disabilities
First off, be good for the sub. Help her out by working well and get active today.
You looked up different disabilities last class, here are some you found that are more prevalent. I want you to pick one and answer the questions at the end. You can answer as a comment, in an email to me, or on paper. Whatever way you want.
Rett Syndrome
Tourette Syndrome
Fragile X Syndrome
Epilepsy
Auditory Processing Disorder
Alzheimers
Multiple Sclerosis
Strabismus
Questions:
1- Define the disability. How does it impact a person's life?
2- What caused it?
3- Is it treatable? If so, how?
4- Anything else interesting?
Be good! See you next week. Bring your work with you if you used paper.

Physical Impairments
ANNOUNCEMENT: We are going to the YMCA on Thursday. Please leave early, 12:05, for lunch and go to the FAC classroom.
We have been talking about physical disabilities and even experienced some of these. Watch these videos, and think about the difficulties you experienced last week writing, opening a container, and going to the restroom.
I want you to compare the struggles you faced doing the simple tasks I asked you to do, to the everyday, every minute challenges these two individuals face.
Please comment on your thoughts, how you feel after thinking about your experience last week, versus what these guys face. What do they teach you? What can we learn from them?

Spread the Word to End the Word
I want you to watch these videos first.
Answer these questions in your comment:
1- Does it surprise you to hear someone like Johnny Knoxville supporting this cause? Why?
2- Imagine the 3rd video not being about Special Olympics and the guy not saying "It's fantastic!" at the end. Do you think this accurately portrays how people with disabilities feel when they are made fun of? Why?
I want you to go to the End the R Word website and explore. Click on the R word counter and see if some of the websites you use are guilty of using the R word.
