History of Special Education

We've spent a little time talking about the history of special education and conditions for people with disabilities long ago. Now I want you to see it.

As you watch this, think about the other kids you know and we work with. Think about them in the situation you'll see in the clip. Think about the things they are able to do, that they might not have been able to do had they been born just 30 years earlier. I want you to think about this; Senator Robert Kennedy made his remarks in 1965. The reporter, Geraldo Rivera, did his report in 1972. 7 years and still no change. Think about the words being used and why we no longer use them.

Answer these questions in your comment:

1- Why does change take so long?
2- What effect do you think this report had on the American public?
3- What are your personal reflections about how people have been treated historically?

    1. change may take a long time because people dont really know whats going on like in this video people may not know whats going on in those homes and may have no idea how it is in that home.
2.i think this report had a lot of effect on people because watching it just showed how bad they were treated and no one wants to be treated like that and so people mostlilly looked at it and knew there had to be some kind of change.
3.i dont think it is right that they got treated like that back then because of something they couldnt change if they wanted too, i think more people should have wanted to help out back then and maybe learn more about what was going on but that didnt happen. its really sad because parents could just drop their kids off at that home and then they wouldnt see them again.

  3. 1. I think change takes so long to happen because a lot of people don't like change and unless everyone agrees that they want things to be different nothing will happen.
    2. I think this report probably made some people want things to be different and to change and thats probably why today things are so much different from back then, because so many people decided they wanted a change
    3. I hate seeing or reading about how people with disabilities were treated back then. it makes me sad and kind of mad that anyone could do that to a human being. I'd hate to be treated like that. -kinsey w.

  4. 1. I think change takes so long because sometimes people don't realize that the change is for the better. People are stubborn sometimes and think they're right when alot of times change is better for everyone.
    2. I think this report had a big effect to the public. People were finally seeing how the people with disabilities were being treated. It wasn't their choice to be there and have a disability and I think everyone was shocked and upset after seeing what it was really like. But at the same time I think that it didn't make a difference to some people since it took SO long for a change to be made.
    3. I think that the way these people were treated was terrible. Like I said above, it wasn't their choice to be there and they should have had the same care and treatment that people without disabilities had.

  5. 1. i think that change took a long time because in 1965 people dint know what to do with the information that was given to them, then when it got broughten up again in 1972 they finally realized that something should be done.

2.i think that the american public was shocked when they found out, and they were probably really angry and shocked that this was happening.

3.i think its really messed up that kids with disabilities were treeted so different back then. what they did was like dehuminzing. i cant imagine if people in our class had to go live in a place like that.

  6. 1.) I think this change and relization took so long because people don't realize that those kids are people too. They talk about it being wrong and how they need a change but they don't do anything about it.
2.) I think the Ametrican public cared for these children but didn't care enough to help them. They didn't realize that they should of been in a completly different environment.
3.)I feel like they are treating these kids completly wrong. They should be in a better environment, where they can learn and have fun. They should be taken care of, and seen by doctors. It makes me kinda mad, because they shouldn't of treated these kids like that. If I would of been one of these kids parents I would never put my kid in a place like that /:

  7. 1.i think change takes long because some people might feel as strong as other people about things. i think in order for change to happpen quickly alot of people have to be willing to step up as soon as something bad happens, not wait until it gets worse.
    2. i think the report had the most effect on people who had children with disabillities. if it would have had a strong effect on the american public, it probably wouldnt have taken so long for things to change.
    3. i perosnally think they have been treated horribly back then. i also think they were very wrong to do that to all of those kids. i am very glad things have changed in this generation.
